Advanced Practice Nurse - Head & Neck Surgery

The primary purpose of the Advanced Practice Nurse position is to provide support to the attending physicians on the inpatient floor and the Head & Neck Surgery Survivorship Program and to provide direct and indirect medical services to patients within the scope of the education, training and experience of the Advanced Practice Nurse that are delegated by the supervising physicians and in accordance with policies established by the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff and consistent with the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners guidelines and existing state laws.
Responsible for the performance of increasingly independent and complex tasks which would otherwise be performed by a physician. To provide expert direct and/or indirect patient care clinically, administratively, and/or academically.
1. Patient Care - Direct (85%)
a. Provide advanced patient care in a clinical setting, to include evaluation of new patients, existing patients, and in-patients; to provide immediate preoperative and postoperative assessment of patients.
b. To surgically assist designated physicians in the operative setting, performing duties as delegated to include first assisting as required.
c. Perform routine patient care and advanced technical studies in a clinical setting to include but not limited to:
1. fiberoptic nasopharyngoscopy
2. punch, excisional and incisional biopsy
3. wide local excision of skin lesions
4. cerumen removal and microscopic evaluation of the ear
5. placement of nasogastric feeding tubes
6. appropriate wound care management
d. Conducts preliminary inpatient rounds in conjunction with the attending physicians and records status in the medical record.
e. Manages daily patient problems as they arise and document actions implemented in their resolution.
f. Perform routine admission procedures.
g. Dictates discharge summaries.
h. Conducts discharge planning.
2. Patient Care - Indirect (5%)
a. Provide counseling and education to the patient and their family concerning their health care and sensitive ethical situations.
b. Provide a direct link from the supervising physician to other physicians/departments to facilitate optimal patient care and timeliness of appropriate care.
c. Provide a contact for patients, families, referring physicians, pharmacists, and other allied health personnel concerning the immediate and long term patient care plans.
3. Administrative (5%)
a. Process correspondence with patients, physicians, third party carriers and other entities as delegated by the supervising physician.
b. Assist supervising physician with routine chart follow-ups and order appropriate referrals, laboratory, radiological or supportive care as needed.
c. Assist with and maintain patient records in compliance with UTMDACC guidelines.
4. Research (5%)
a. Review patient charts carefully, input data into computer database.
b. Assist research nurses in identifying patients who may benefit by protocol registration.
Job Description-Requirements EDUCATION:
Required: Master's Degree in Nursing. May be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an Advanced Practice Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003. Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.
Required: All of the following:
Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing to function as an Advanced Practice Nurse.
MAY BE REQUIRED: Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing.
